Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulation
(Energywork)
What IASTM Is
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulation (IASTM) is a modern therapeutic technique inspired by the traditional Gua Sha practices of Chinese Medicine. It uses smooth‑edged, medical‑grade stainless steel tools to assess and treat soft‑tissue restrictions with precision and ease. These tools allow the practitioner to work more specifically and deeply than with hands alone, while reducing strain on the therapist and enhancing the effectiveness of the treatment.
IASTM is particularly supportive for releasing myofascial restrictions, improving tissue glide, and addressing areas of chronic tightness, adhesions, or scar tissue. It blends beautifully with your existing remedial and myofascial work, offering a targeted approach that complements your intuitive, holistic style.
How IASTM Works
Using gentle scraping, gliding, and compressive techniques, the tools create controlled micro‑stimulation within the soft tissues. This encourages increased blood flow, tissue hydration, and cellular activity in the affected area. As circulation improves, the body begins to remodel adhesions, soften scar tissue, and restore healthier movement patterns.
IASTM also activates mechanoreceptors — sensory receptors in the fascia — which helps reduce pain, improve proprioception, and support the nervous system in releasing protective tension. By enhancing the slide‑and‑glide properties of fascia, this modality helps restore balance, mobility, and functional movement throughout the body.
This technique is grounded in the same principles as Myofascial Release, but offers greater specificity, depth, and efficiency
